Landmark: Subsea Instrumented Pressure Protection System Installed for Flowline Protection from Extreme Pressures

The Vega subsea system project is designed for high 475 bar WH pressure and 135 degrees Celsius. Each Vega manifold utilizes three off 9" SIPPS (Subsea Instrumented Pressure Protection Systems) to protect the flowline from XT pressure. The flowline design pressure is 250 bar. The SIPPS will close down the production within 15 seconds if the pressure increases above set limit. The project includes qualification of numerous new instruments as well as valves and seals that are qualified for broader temperature and pressure ranges.

The Vega field consists of three separate gas-condensate accumulations (Camilla, Belinda and Fram-B) located in Norwegian Sector. The fields were located in 1980 (Camilla), 1982 (Belinda) and 1987 (Fram-B) and were long considered commercially unfeasible. However, increased gas prices and new technology developments have made a profitable solution possible.

A number of the technological developments that have made the project possible are being qualified as part of the project. A total of 32 separate qualifications have been identified in the project and contribute to making this project technologically challenging.

FMC will deliver three template structures with six wells, expandable to 12 and 20 with two additional manifolds. The well stream will be delivered to the Gjøa facility through a 51 km-long pipeline. Production on Vega is planned to start in October 2010. The total recoverable resources on the field are about 18 billion standard cubic meters of gas and 26 million barrels of condensate.
