Statoil Ormen Lange

Statoil Ormen Lange

Norway Blocks 6305/1, 2, 4, 5, 7 and 8

Landmark: Europe's deepest subsea development at 3,300 ft (1,000 m)

The Ormen Lange development is so far the single largest project in Norway. As many as 18,000 people have been employed directly and indirectly as a result of this project. The development is situated 75 miles (120 km) off the west coast of Norway in the upper part of the Storegga area. Natural gas reserves cover a geographical area of 130 miles2 (350 km2) and are located in water depths varying from 2,800 to 3,600 ft (850 to 1,000 m). The seabed is very irregular, with a soil varying from stiff rock to soft clay.

The wellstream is transferred via pipelines to an onshore processing plant. The processed gas is transported through pipelines and then exported to the U.K. and the European continent. Statoil was the operator for the planning and development phase. Shell took over as operator when Ormen Lange came onstream in October 2007. Shell is responsible and has drilled the existing production wells.
