Apache East Spar

Apache East Spar

Landmark: Asia’s first spar used on a subsea development

The development consists of an initial two wells followed by an additional well which was completed at a later date. The system is designed to produce 100 mmcf/d of natural gas, which is exported by a 14" pipeline to a terminal on Varanus Island, 39 miles (63 km) away from the subsea development.

The requirement for a very long umbilical was eliminated by the innovative solution of controlling the subsea wells via a communications buoy on the field, which also provides chemical injection. Further innovations used on this project included two subsea multiphase flowmeters, a subsea corrosion monitoring system and two subsea heat exchangers to cool the produced fluid. Production from the field began in November 1996, one month earlier than planned.
