The design of the pig is of the upmost importance in the final quality of the pigging operation. The elimination of all product residue depends on its ability to form a very close fit with the inside of the pipe while resisting pipe abrasion. Available in a wide range of materials and diameters, FMC's patented bi-directional pigs meet the requirements of almost all petroleum and chemical industry applications.
FMC standard bi-directional pig consists of a cleaning central element, two half pig bodies and a magnetic core.
The central cleaning element is composed of a number of flexible double lip seals that remain in contact with the interior wall of the pipe regardless of elbows, valves and variations in diameter. The exclusive design of the pig enables it to pig even short radius elbows and to pig any product residue deposited onto the inner wall of the pipe.
The two half pig bodies have a plastic tip at each end to absorb shocks when the pig is stopped at the end of the line or by a pig stopper.
The magnetic core that is moulded in the pig body enables the system to locate the pigs using magneto inductive sensors.
The materials of the pig depend on the product handled. The central cleaning element is the only interchangeable wearing part and has the advantage of being easily replaceable on-site.
