The MKIV's numerous options and refinements enable significant cost savings for typical applications that include long distance step-outs, well instrument data feedback and control of remote manifolds, templates and complex fields. The electro-hydraulic design of the MKIV offers several distinct advantages over direct hydraulic control systems, including:
- Instantaneous hydraulic venting of the actuators
- Increased instrumentation capabilitiles
- ROV retrieval with down line
FMC Technologies’ MK IV Subsea Control Module’s improved design provides a more economical solution for controlling small subsea trees requiring a step-out distance of 3 or more miles from the topside production facility. Historically, direct hydraulic controls have been used for this type of control application.
The design of the MK IV Multiplex Electro/Hydraulic Control Module (Mini-SCM) is based on the more than 650 SCMs FMC has delivered and installed to date. This design offers several advantages over conventional direct hydraulic control systems, including instantaneous hydraulic venting of the actuators, increased instrumentation capabilities, and ROV retrievability with down line.
The topside Subsea Control Unit (SCU) utilizes communications on power to monitor, control, and shut down the well via the multiplexed electro-hydraulic Mini-Subsea Control Module. The SCU cabinet contains an industrial PCI bus computer, flat screen display, keyboard, mouse, and the Electrical Power Unit (EPU) housed in the console. A Class I, DIV I console can be supplied along with optional remote monitoring capabilities if required.
Components:
- Hydraulic Power Unit (HPU)
- Subsea Control Unit (Mini-SCU)
- MQC plates for hydraulic connection to Xmas tree
- Electrical Termination for Umbilical and Electrical Flying Lead
- Umbilical: Direct connect to Mini SCM
- Independent retrievable Mini-SCM Assembly

Installation Options
FMC's MKIV offers several options for installation, including retrofitting to an existing direct hydraulic sbusea tree or manifold. If required, the unit may be deployed at a PLET (Pipeline End Termination), manifold or UTA (Umbilical Termination Assembly) to control their functions as well as those of the subsea tree. These options can be used to expand existing direct hydraulic structures with minimal additions of subsea distribution equipment.
