FMC Technologies supplied limestone and gypsum handling systems at the Asheville Steam Plant in Arden, NC.
The plant consists of four units with a 700 MW generation capacity. New Flue Gas Desulfurization (FGD) equipment was added to the existing coal-fired steam generating facility.
The gypsum handling system was designed to collect FGD gypsum from four centrifuges (supplied by owner) and transport the gypsum to a storage pile. This system features two gypsum conveyors and a telescopic chute, which was designed to rise automatically as the pile height increases.
The limestone handling system was designed to reclaim limestone from a storage pile and transport it to day bins. FMC Technologies provided three limestone conveyors complete with belt loaders, belt cleaners, metal detectors, dust collectors, and support structures. All conveyors are enclosed with full-cover hinged hood covers to allow for ease in maintenance and inspection. The covers extend for the entire length of the outdoor portion of the conveyors. This system also features a 30" wide limestone belt feeder, a limestone metal detector, and pile discharger with emergency rack and pinion shut-off gate.
FMC Technologies' scope consisted of design and supply of the limestone and gypsum systems, dust collection system, limestone control system and gypsum control system.
