Chiksan Constant Motion Swivel Joints

The latest result of FMC's research and technical innovations is the Chiksan® LNG constant motion swivel joint. It is a key factor in FMC's proven ability to meet the very demanding challenges presented by installations at exposed or offshore locations where constant motion requirements are specified.

Constant R&D investment over the years by FMC in LNG Loading Systems technology has resulted in much enhanced operating reliability and safety for its land-based systems. It has also led to the development of the Chiksan constant motion LNG swivel joint for offshore applications whether for side by side or tandem loading from a Floating Production, Storage and Offloading unit (FPSO).
At an exposed location with no breawater, there is a continual movement of the LNG carrier. The swivel joints are therefore subject to a large range of movements depending on the roll and surge resulting from changes in wind direction, currents and waves as well as whether the carrier is empty or full. It is with these situations in mind that the Constant motion swivel joint was developed in accordance with the exacting specifications of the OCIMF.
Initially this swivel joint was rigorously tested with liquid nitrogen at -190°C for a period of three years, and since 1993 it has been operating reliability at exposed location LNG terminals with no LNG shipments missed.

Features

  • The constant motion swivel joint features Chiksan snap-in-ball races to obtain the necessary depth of hardness for the local carrying capacity to which the swivel joints will be subjected
  • Chiksan LNG cryopack seals for optimal reliability

Benefits

  • Field proven seal design
  • Long service life
  • Enhanced reliability and safety
  • In situ replacement capability of seals and swivel joints with no need for outside lifting equipment
  • Environmental protection
